Over a million MP40s were produced for German forces during the Second World War, and they were seen as an excellent second-generation weapon - perfect for new tactics.... They were originally supplied to Nazi paratroopers for parachute invasions; however, after devastating losses against the submachine gun-equipped Soviet armies, it was agreed that they could have a greater effect with assault forces. Movies and games often choose to give these weapons to the typical German soldiers, although in reality they were less prevalent on the ground, in comparison to the Karabiner 98k rifle. The German army struggled to finance production of these two main guns during the war, due to the costs of mass production for such an expansive army. The MP40 used the 9mm cartridge to devastating effect.
