M60

Weight has always been an issue with machine guns, and the production of the M60 was no exception. It may have been planned as a lightweight alternative to older guns in 1957, but soldiers still called it "the Pig" later on during the Vietnam War. Soldiers also complained it kept jamming due to dirt. Despite their criticism, the M60 is still successfully in service with the U.S. Army helicopters, and with the Navy. It was originally designed using aspects of German machine guns which American officials thought were impressive, such as the side-loading belt feed. The M60 has been used in multiple movies, especially on helicopters. In movie circles, the M60 is possibly most famous for being in Rambo's arms on a regular basis. The M60 uses the unstoppable .308 Winchester / 7.62x51mm....

Modern Warfare

In recent decades, warfare has changed dramatically to suit the most recent technologies and tactics.

But despite advances in technology and the ongoing arms race one fact remains - guns are still the defacto means of arming soldiers, and that doesn't look set to change any time in the near future. Many firearms and cartridges can trace their lineage back over a hundred years which just goes to show that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Different countries will always have different views on how to arm their troops - here are just a few that can be seen in a war near you....

Vietnam

The Vietnam War started because the country was split between communism in the north and capitalism in the south. The Viet Cong rebels who wanted to free the south started a powerful revolution during the Cold War. America continued to support the south, and when a war against the North began in November 1955, they offered assistance.

However, the American public were worried by the escalating crisis and angered by the casualties. Nearly 550,000 troops were in the area when President Nixon decided to withdraw. Eventually, the North Vietnamese Army defeated the unprotected south after all the American troops had returned to America in 1973.

The American soldiers used the Colt M1911 as their main sidearm. The early M16s had serious failures which caused the deaths of many American soldiers who were trying to fix their guns in the middle of the battle. These flaws were fixed by 1968, and most old models were replaced within a few years. The M1918 BAR was also used in the earlier stages of the war, and was seen as an impressive machine gun.

It trails the special forces under the command of Major "Dutch", on their mission to rescue important hostages from Guatemalan soldiers. Upon arrival, they find a destroyed helicopter and dead soldiers, and locate a rebel base which they then attack. Suddenly, the predator arrives; it hunts each team member, and kills them one by one.
