Description
This firearm is most well-known as James Bond's main service handgun, which he was introduced to in Dr. No. He was encouraged to choose it due to its superior delivery - "like a brick through a plate glass window" in the words of world arms expert Major Boothroyd. However, few people know that Ian Fleming changed his mind because a fan moaned that Bond's Beretta 418 pistol was a lady's gun, and ought to be changed. Fleming agreed and introduced the PPK instead. Despite the fairly low power output of the gun, its small size (thanks to the tiny .32 ACP cartridge) means it can be concealed easily and allows it to sit in the hand with relative comfort. First introduced in 1931, the PPK has received moderate popularity since starring in the Bond films. This gun was also used by Karl in Die Hard, presumably due to the German links. The gun has been adapted many times; for example, there is a lightweight version of the gun which adopts an aluminium body, and another with a blue steel finish made in Hungary. This was once the weapon of choice for European police agencies, and was especially popular in Nazi Germany - Hitler committed suicide using his trusty PPK, ending one of the most horrific wars of all time.
